We have enjoyed getting stuck into our learning this week in Year 6! It has been great to continue getting to know our classes, and we have been really impressed with the brilliant attitudes to learning we have seen.
Maths
In Maths, we have continued our learning on place value – an important foundation for the rest of the year. We have been looking closely at multiplying and dividing numbers by 10, 100, and 1,000, as well as thinking about the composition of 7-digit numbers. Writing
In Writing, we have been reading different examples of short stories and looking at the ‘craft moves’ that make them successful. We ended the week by planning our own stories, ready to begin writing next week.
STEM
In STEM, we have been learning about the circulatory system and blood. We also learnt about blood donation and created information posters to be shared with the blood donation service at Addenbrooke’s.
Project
In Project, we began learning about the British Empire. We examined secondary sources and discussed the importance of thinking critically about the sources we use as historians. We explored a painting by Benjamin West depicting Robert Clive and talked about why we need to consider bias when studying historical sources.
PE
In PE, we have been doing orienteering and brushing up on our map skills.
Guided Reading
Our Guided Reading book this half-term is Freedom by Catherine Johnson. We have read Chapters 1–3 and begun discussing the links between slavery and the British Empire.
Next week:
Maths: We will continue consolidating our place value knowledge.
Writing: We will be drafting our own short stories, focusing on mastering the different craft moves we have identified.
STEM: We will be exploring the function and structure of the heart.
Project: We will continue learning about the British Empire in India.
Guided Reading: We will read Chapters 4–6 of Freedom.
