Thank you all for your support at the Year 5 bake sale last week. You raised over £300 to be used for Year 5 learning and curriculum. This is amazing! It was also wonderful to see many of you taking part in the multi-lingual Jackanory book-reading on world book day. Many children brought in special books from home to share with their classes and it was great to have some recommendations as well as see such a variety of languages represented.
This week in English we have been discussing the author, purpose and audience for our information texts. Children are really excited to have the freedom to write about something they know a lot about. They may come home with some research to do in preparation for drafting next week.
In Maths, we have been learning about multiplying fractions by integers and finding a fraction of a whole number. We made the connection that when you are finding a ‘fraction of’ an integer, it is the same as multiplying a fraction by that integer. Crazy! In Geography we got practical with atlases, locating several continental islands, as well as learning about some tidal islands. 
In Science we are studying a unit on plants. Last week, we got to dissect daffodils, to learn about sexual reproduction in plants. This week, we learnt about asexual reproduction such as happens with potatoes, strawberries and garlic through runners, bulbs and tubers.

Next week:
Some children are coming to school without the correct PE kit. Many of our PE lessons take place outside and it is essential that children have a pair of trainers to wear when running outside.
We will continue our art lessons with Mrs Smith in the art room, which have been really fun so far.
In English we will be drafting our information leaflets and starting to revise them.
In Maths, we will be continuing with fractions of a whole, as well as relating fractions to tenths and hundredths as decimals and then moving on to percentages.
