What a wonderful week in year 5.
Tuesday saw two buzzing bus-loads of children heading to Hunstanton to sum up our geography project, Dynamic Coasts. We explored both manmade features (such as the pier, sea defences and lighthouse) as well as natural features (particularly the stunning striped cliffs) before topping everything off with some delicious fish and chips. Thank you to all children for representing UCPS so well.
In Maths, we are in the thick of our geometry topic about angles and measurement. We revised year 4 knowledge about types of angles, and have continued to build accuracy with measurements using protractors. We will finish this up next week, and move on to properties of 3D shapes (for example, vertices, edges and faces). This week’s sheets: Summer 1 – Week 3 sheets
In English, the children have been writing their memoirs and are beginning to revise them. We practiced using a wider variety of past tenses, particularly focusing on using the past progressive tense to show an action in progress which is interrupted by another action (e.g., I was running until I got a blister). We also used the 5 senses to add richness to our descriptions, and returned to our skill of ‘showing, not telling’ to describe emotions. Next week, we will consider further ways to improve our writing, ready to publish soon!

In Science, we continued our topic about Earth and space. We learnt some fun facts about the planets of our solar system, before moving on to consider the size and distance of planets to scale. For example, if we shrunk the solar system down until the sun was 10 metres in diameter, how big would Earth be? How far would each planet be from the sun? This website is a great way to visualise our solar system, particularly regarding size, distance, and the time taken to orbit the sun. Finally, we moved on to the mathematical skill of plotting line graphs to theorise how a planet’s average temperature might relate to its distance from the sun. We discovered that, generally, the further a body is from the sun, the lower its average temperature, but there were some outliers in our data which were interesting to discuss. Next week, we will consider historical theories about our solar system.
In Art, we have been developing our drawings of symbolic and hybrid creatures by using ink pens. Our focus has been on using mark-making to create light, shade and textures such as fur and scales. We will be continuing this next week.
In P.E., the children really enjoyed playing Frisbee on the field. They have begun to consider defensive and offensive strategies as well as developing their throwing technique.
