Another busy week in Year 5!
It’s a jam-packed term, and the children have been amazing—showing enthusiasm in computing, creativity in art, and a great spirit of adventure in forest school. The sun shone brightly this week, making our outdoor learning even more enjoyable.
Maths
We focused on translation and reflection. The children translated and reflected shapes on grids, identified the coordinates of the vertices, and explored the key differences between these two types of movement. English
We explored a range of journey stories and used them to generate ideas for the children’s own narratives. They’ve learned different methods for planning stories and created detailed outlines for their own journey tales. They’re now ready to begin drafting next week!
STEM
Our Solar System topic continued with a focus on the distances between planets. We also compared planetary temperatures and discussed why Venus, despite not being the closest to the Sun, is the hottest planet—a fascinating outlier!
Guided Reading
We continued Zoe’s story as she navigates her experiences with the Eels tribe, diving deeper into the themes and characters.
Computing
The children began exploring The Little Bits kits, learning how to connect components and code simple functions—an exciting introduction to hands-on electronics.
Forest School
We had our first session this week, which included a bug scavenger hunt and learning how to start a fire using cotton wool and a flint and steel. The children had so much fun exploring nature and developing their outdoor skills!
We were also lucky to have an informative assembly by Ayala about her family’s personal connection to WW2.
Looking Ahead: Next Week
We’ll be heading to forest school again next week. Please ensure your child comes with long sleeves, trousers, and appropriate footwear, as this is required to meet safety and risk assessment guidelines.
We’ll also be celebrating the 80th anniversary of VE Day with activities designed to help the children understand the significance of this historical event.
Next week, we will also be holding Learning Conversations. This is a chance for parents to discuss anything they wish regarding their child’s school report. You’re welcome to prepare any questions or comments you may have in advance.
