What an awesome, Shakespearean week!
In maths, children explored reflections and lines of symmetry to finish our geometry topic, before completing a unit check for assessment. This week’s sheets can be found here: reflect shapes reflection sheets Symmetry worksheet
In STEM, we concluded our topic about the Earth and space with learning about sun dials, time zones and the phases of the moon. Children got stuck in to some devious challenges related to time zones, using atlases to locate cities and applying the correct time zones to each one. Then, our frisbee-filled term culminated by the final UCPS Games of the year. Children across year 5 and 6 battled windy conditions to score points against other teams. Congratulations to year 5’s winners, Sagarmatha, and thank you to all the visitors who made the event possible.
For the rest of the week, children were off-timetable to dive into the wonderful world of Romeo and Juliet.
We explored key scenes from the play through active storytelling, with each classroom transformed into the Globe Theatre for children to perform key events such as the masquerade ball, the balcony scene, the fight between Romeo and Tybalt, and the tragic ending. Children also got stuck in by learning the skills of safe stage fighting, practicing how to make a fake slap sound real! This culminated in a mini writing project inspired by a scene of Romeo and Juliet. Some children wrote news articles about the tragic deaths of the two main characters, and others re-imagined the story of two warring families with other concepts such as animals, war or the planets in space.
In art, we created masks suitable for the masquerade ball where Romeo and Juliet first met. Children considered the symbolism they could include, such as the sun and the moon, before decorating them with accessories. 
For next half term:
- PE kits will be needed for Thursdays.
- As the weather warms, children must bring a water bottle and sun hat into school, and sun cream is strongly advised. In hot weather, children without a sun hat will not be allowed to play in the sun.
