It’s been another exciting and productive week in Year 5, filled with learning, creativity and hands-on exploration.
This week in maths, the children revised how to read both the 24-hour and 12-hour clock. They practised converting between am/pm and 24-hour time and applied their learning to solve real-life timetable word problems.
Please continue to encourage your child to practise reading analogue clocks at home. Many of them prefer digital clocks, but confidently reading analogue clocks is an essential life skill that supports independence and time management.
In English, we explored a range of poetic techniques to enrich our writing. The children experimented with alliteration, onomatopoeia and repetition, as well as more advanced language features such as personification and pathetic fallacy.
Using these techniques, everyone planned and drafted their own imaginative poems, transforming everyday objects and experiences into something magical.
STEM
After a week of observing eggshells placed in water, juice, and cola, we reviewed our science investigation results. The children noticed some fascinating changes, helping them better understand how different liquids can affect our teeth. This experiment was a brilliant way to deepen our understanding of dental health and the importance of making healthy choices.
D&T: Cam Toys Take Shape
In D&T, the children made fantastic progress on their cam toys. They selected and positioned their cams, created followers, tested and improved their mechanisms through trial and error. This process involved real-life problem-solving, as they engaged in iterative design, trying, changing, testing, and improving. Next week, they will move on to the final stage: decorating their completed cam toys!
