This week in Year 5, we have had an exciting start to our new topic “Explosive Nature”, exploring everything from volcanoes to vibrant artwork!
Geography
We launched our new project by learning about the three main types of rock: sedimentary, igneous and metamorphic. The children also explored the structure of the Earth, gaining an understanding of the crust, mantle and core.
Our volcano learning continued as we compared shield volcanoes and stratovolcanoes, looking closely at their features and basic structure. The class really enjoyed discovering how these incredible natural wonders are formed.
Maths
In Maths, the children have been working hard on multiples and factors, learning how to identify common multiples and common factors of different numbers. Their knowledge of multiplication facts and times tables has supported them brilliantly.

English
This week, we began planning our Information Texts. The children explored different types of engaging openings and started drafting their own writing. Next week, we will continue drafting and begin revising and improving their work.
PE
Our new gymnastics unit focuses on symmetry, balance and travel. In the first lesson, the children worked in pairs and triads to create impressive symmetrical shapes, using a range of equipment to support their sequences.
Art
In Art, the children created beautiful sunset backgrounds using ripped coloured paper. This activity helps build the collage skills they will need to produce a dramatic piece of artwork: a volcano erupting at the end of the term!
Next Week
Maths: We will be learning about prime numbers, square numbers, and cube numbers.
Writing: We will continue drafting and revising our Information Texts.
Geography: Children will learn about earthquakes and tectonic plates, building further on our “Explosive Nature” theme.
