It was lovely to welcome the children back to school again and hear about what they have done over the holidays. In our three day week, we fit in lots of fantastic learning.
In Maths, we returned to our fractions topic, converting between mixed numbers and improper fractions. With two lessons to build on this skill, the children are growing increasingly confident. Our worksheets can be found here: sheets for blog. Remember that strong times tables knowledge is a foundation to many of our maths skills, particularly fractions. Practicing regularly on TTRS is incredibly beneficial to children as we move onto more challenging fractions topics.
In English, we began our new topic where we will be writing scary short stories. Reading lots of different examples of scary stories, including some written by year 5 children last year, has given the children lots of gory and gruesome ideas to write about! Next week, we will focus on refining our ideas and planning. Our aim is to type up and publish the stories on the blog at the end of term so they can be shared with friends and family.
We also started our History topic about The Maya. Because this civilisation spanned such a large time period, we began by placing The Maya within the chronology of other civilisations the children have studied at school, like the Anglo Saxons or Ancient Greeks. By placing these on a timeline, children were able to see what else was going on in the world while The Maya were active.

We also started reading our new book, There’s a Boy in the Girls’ Bathroom, which is all about dealing with emotions, fitting in at school and making friends. So far, it has opened up many insightful conversations about fitting in and behaviour. To practice reading skills further at home, here are some First News comprehension sheets: L2-Reading-Practice-978 L2-Reading-Practice-987
