Well done to one and all for the hard work in our assessment week.
Children were assessed in writing, maths arithmetic and reasoning, and reading comprehension. They also had to consider year 6, who were conducting their SATs this week. Year 5 showed incredible empathy by remaining silent during all SAT examinations, even when it meant changes to their usual routines or breaktimes. Well done for the hard work and perseverance!
In Maths, we focused on translations, with careful and accurate drawings. We worked hard on creating precise lines with rulers to ensure our drawings were clear, as well as using coordinates. Next week, we will be moving on to reflections and symmetry. This week’s sheets: Translation sheets
In English, the children have been editing their memoirs for spelling, punctuation and grammar. At the end of the week, they started to publish their memoirs ready to share with their chosen audience. We have been so impressed with the wide range of adventures and meaningful experiences written about throughout the year group.

In Science, we continued our topic about Earth and space with a particular focus on the movement of the Earth and planets relative to the sun. Building onto our knowledge from last week about the heliocentric solar system, we explored the Earth’s rotation on a tilted axis, as well as its oval-shaped orbit around the sun. We considered how this affects day and night, the seasons, and sunrise/sunset. To apply this practically, we measured our shadows throughout the morning until midday, noticing that they grew shorter as the sun rose higher into the sky. We theorised that it would start to get shorter again throughout the afternoon, but it was too cloudy to check! Next week, we will build on this by discussing time zones and creating sun dials.
In Art, we have been finalising our drawings of symbolic and hybrid creatures by designing border frames. We were inspired by woodcut printing, and mimicked this black and white style to create geometric, natural or ornate borders for our mythical creations. The final pieces look absolutely wonderful!
Notes for next week:
– We will be finishing the term with Shakespeare week! Though maths will be as normal, writing and other wider curriculum subjects will be replaced with an exploration of the wonderful world of William Shakespeare. Year 5 will be focusing on Romeo and Juliet, with lots of active storytelling and historical immersion before they write their own interpretation of a scene. We will also explore the world of Shakespearean costuming to create an accessory from one of the most important scenes in the play! Children will also have some wonderful theatrical ballet sessions delivered by other teachers in school on Monday, Wednesday and Thursday.
– As well as Shakespeare week, Wednesday will see the UCPS games, frisbee edition. Please ensure the children have full PE kit and trainers for this, and are prepared for some unpredictable weather! We are looking forward to the children displaying all they have learn so far about this unique sport.
