Firstly, thank you very much for the cake donations! The office were blown away with the number of sweet treats that were received, and the money earnt will go towards resources for our year group.
In English, we started reading Running on Empty. We discussed the meaning of additional needs and explored the characters, particularly AJ, who lives with his mum and dad, both of whom have additional needs. Year 5 will be creating leaflets for Neurodiversity Awareness Week at the end of the spring term. As part of this project, they will develop their expository writing skills while learning more about additional needs.
In Maths, we focused on adding and subtracting mixed numbers and improper fractions with integers. The children practiced working with different denominators, ensuring they were the same before adding or subtracting. They also partitioned mixed numbers into whole and fractional parts before performing calculations. Find the sheets here: Maths Spring 2 Week 1
In STEM, we investigated plant reproduction by dissecting a daffodil. The children examined its structure and created infographics detailing each part of the flower and its role in reproduction.
In Guided Reading, we began Noor-Un-Nissa Inayat Khan, a real-life story about a female spy during the Second World War. The children are very enthusiastic about learning more about WW2 and are already enjoying the book.
In Project, we started our new unit on coasts. We began by recapping the continents and comparing them to islands, laying the foundation for further exploration of coastal environments.
We will also be starting a lovely Art project this term focusing on the ‘diamond moments’ in our writing. The children will be using some of their English work as inspiration to create illustrations.

Next Week
On Thursday 6th March, from 15:30 to 16:15, the school will have a multilingual reading event! Different teachers will be reading stories in 8 different languages. The details will be sent via email, but if you want to check the languages or the rooms they will be in, there will be a poster with everything on each classroom’s window.
