Another fun-filled week, with the half-term holiday close on the horizon!
In English, we finished drafting our myths, before focusing on the revising and editing processes. We revised our work to add in extra similes, fronted adverbials and relative clauses, before editing for spelling, punctuation and grammar. Next week, we will publish our stories and share them with each other! Out aim is to compile them into a whole-class book of myths for our reading corner.
In Maths, we assessed our knowledge of the two topics we have completed so far: place value and negative numbers. The children worked hard to apply some knowledge to a range of questions, and all tried their best. We ended the week with some mental calculation skills, practicing various ways to make additions and subtractions more efficient. In STEM, we explored new materials. Specifically, we learnt about the super-thin and flexible graphene, which has uses ranging from electronic touch-screens to water filtration. We also learnt about the new material Geckel, which is both sticky and non-sticky at the same time thanks to its gecko-like grooves. We used iPads to research independently, before writing a persuasive letter to promote these amazing inventions.
In History, we learnt about what life in Anglo-Saxon Britain may have been like. The children made notes about villages, jobs, food and clothes, before using this knowledge to write a diary entry from the perspective of an Anglo-Saxon villager.
To finish the week, Year 5 created Christmas or winter-themed designs which will be sent off to be printed on mugs, cards and more in preparation for Christmas. FOCUS will be sending home order forms relatively soon, so keep an eye out for more information. Children’s designs will be posted on the classroom windows from Monday 13th to Wednesday 15th of October if you want to look at your child’s design before ordering.

- On top of our usual busy schedule, year 5 children will also have an opportunity to take part in a Djembe drumming workshop next week. How exciting!
