We continued looking at our topic themes of discrimination, prejudice and injustice this week through the eyes of Faizah, the main character in our text focus The Proudest Blue. This story follows Faizah’s first day of school, and her sister Asiyah’s first day of hijab. Faizah is full of wonder at the beautiful, bright headscarf but is shocked that there are children at school who are unkind towards her sister for wearing it – saying things like she’s “wearing a tablecloth”.

We began by discussing the main themes of the text and then thought about what inspired the author, Ibtihaj Muhammad, to write this story. We roleplayed being the author in an interview, and created questions to ask her and imagined her responses. We then looked through the story again and found all of the description for the hijab and first day of school, creating mindmaps of vocabulary and describing them in our own words.

Our grammar focus for these week involved two new skills: coordinating conjunctions and subordinate clauses.

Coordinating conjunctions

A conjunction is a type of connective that connects two clauses in a sentence. We use coordinating conjunctions to join two parts of a sentence that are of equal weight or importance. All these words are coordinating conjunctions:

  • and
  • but
  • or
  • nor
  • yet
  • so

Here are some example sentences using each one:

Subordinate Clause (and subordinating conjunctions)

A subordinate clause contains a subject and a verb, but it needs to be attached to a main clause because it cannot make sense on its own. For example:

This is a complex sentence. It has a main clause (‘I first saw her in Paris’) and a subordinate clause (‘ where I lived as a small child’), which relies on the main clause to make sense. The two clauses are joined by the connective ‘where’.

In Maths, we recapped place value up to 4-digits, rounding to the nearest 10, 100, 1000, ordering and comparing numbers using < > = and adding and subtracting 4-digit numbers, along with problem solving.

Maths Worksheets Week 2

In Guided Reading, we continued with the story of Rama and Sita. We have been using this story to find and copy similes and adjectives from the text. We have also been identifying synonyms and antonyms of certain words. This week, we focused on using evidence to support our answer, for example:

Rama is feeling sad.

What is the evidence in the text that this is true?

We are very proud of three of our Year 4 children who took part in the timed mile during the Friendship Race and were placed in 1st or 2nd place within their age category among many other schools in Cambridge. We will continue to provide challenges like this throughout the year to encourage all children to stay physically active.

As part of our commitment to promote physical health and wellbeing, we wanted to share with you these home opportunities and experiences to encourage the children to stay active.

  1. Free after school sport club opportunity: After School Sport Club, #YSTAfterSchool. The Youth Sport Trust will deliver a free virtual after school club as part of a national response to the second lockdown. The 30-minute club will take place at 5pm each weekday on YouTube Live and be led by a different member of the YST’s Athlete Mentor network. Aimed mainly at primary-aged children, a different theme has been assigned for each day of the club – Adventure Monday, Tuesday Play, Wild Wednesday, Thinking Thursday and Fun Friday.
  2. British Orienteering – get active this autumn. Free downloadable activities for families to do at home, in the garden or in your local green spaces. Get Active
  3.  Here is a physical gymanstic challenge you can try at home: Ship Shape. You will get one of these every week so you can continue being active at home Ship Shape.
