We have had a wonderful (but cold) second week of the Spring term. All classes started Forest school this week and it was great to see the children using the skills that they had learnt in previous years. We focused on making fires – what a brilliant start to Forest School is Year 4. We have also enjoyed getting to know more about our topic and cannot wait to learn even more.

In English, we have introduced our new book: Queen of Darkness. We have focused on learning any new vocabulary and have looked at how authors subvert our expectations of characters. If you would like some additional writing practice please see here: writing blog

In Maths, we have continued learning about our times tables and have focused on exploring the links between these. We have focused on the link between the 3’s, 6s and 9’s, 11’s and 12’s. It has been wonderful to see the children using their mathematical knowledge to solve unknown timetables and develop their reasoning skills. If you would like extra practice: Spring 1 Week 2 Maths sheets – 369x 7x11x

In History, we learnt about the importance of Roman Soldiers during the Roman empire and explored their significance today.

In STEM, we have been learning about how sound are made and travelled. We made string phones and then shared these with the Reception classes.

In Guided Reading, we have been looking at character expectations and exploring the differences between literal and figurative.

In Spelling, we have been focusing on the different ways of writing the <ae> sound. We have mainly looked at words containing /a/, /ae/, /ey/, /eigh/, /eight/ and /ai/.

Mr Lucas has out together some Spanish resources for you to use at home if you would like: Spanish Year 4 Spring 1 Week 2

Notes:

It is very cold at the moment so can all children make sure that they bring warm clothes for forest school. If children do not bring in appropriate forest school kit we can not guarantee that they will be able to take part.

We have some school trips to one of the University museums coming up – we need parent 3 parent volunteers oer class to make these trips possible, if you would like to help please let your class teacher know. The trip dates are: Thames (1/02/24), Amazon (2/02/24), Nile (7/02/24).

Have a lovely weekend and thank you as always for your support at home,

Best wishes,

Year 4 team
