This week in English, we continued enjoying ‘Umbrella’ by Elena Arevalo Melville, a beautiful picture book about a magical umbrella that helps people. This week we thought about who else might be in the park, what their problem might be and how the enchanted umbrella might resolve it for them.
We looked at subtracting fractions from a whole (e.g. 1 – 3/5) by first converting the whole into a non-unit fraction, then using our understanding of how to subtract fractions to calculate the answer. We then looked a ‘slow motion’ maths, taking 15 seconds per calculation to look carefully before writing down the solution. To consolidate learning, the worksheets from this week can be found here: Y3 SUM2 W5 MATHS sheets
We continued to enjoy the adventures of Varjak Paw from chapter 29 until the end of chapter 29. The children have been really gripped by the action and are expectantly waiting to see what happens at the end of the story! They have lots of predictions about what *might* happen…
In PRE (philosophy, religion and ethics), we reviewed our understanding of Hindu beliefs about the afterlife, how that may be different from others’ beliefs, discussed the link between choices and consequences and how this is expressed by the Hindu belief in ‘karma’.
Guided Reading: We will continue to enjoy the adventures of Varjak Paw, Chapters 30 and 31. We will discuss, from the evidence presented, how the children think his adventures may end. You can read ahead here: Chapters 30 and 31
English: We will start our final book of the year, “The Big Book of Festivals“, learning about the Hindu festivals of Diwali, Holi and Kumbh Mela.
Maths: We will review our knowledge of the x6 and x8 times tables, and then apply this understanding to help us solve calculation problems involving perimeter of regular and irregular 2d shapes.
Notices/ Reminders / Requests:
Sports day – Sports day is on Thursday 13th July. Every child has been assigned a colour team and these colour allocations can be found on the classroom windows.
Spanish – on Thursday 13th, we will be enjoying our final Spanish lesson of the year with a real ice-cream tasting and kiosk activity, led by our native speakers. The children will order their ice creams from a menu, and have to order them in Spanish. If your child is vegan or dairy-free, please let their classteacher know ahead of the day so we can cater for their needs appropriately. None of the ice creams will contain nuts.
Family Friday – Our final Family Friday of the year is on Friday 14th July from 2.30pm to 3pm. Please do come to your child’s classroom to let them show you their books! All the children’s books (except Spanish, which moves up with them) can then be taken home to keep.
PE – PE kits will come home on Friday 14th July.
Sun Protection – please can children remember to bring a sun hat and sun protection cream to school with them or apply before the school day, as well as their water bottles.
With best wishes and thanks
