All the fun of the fair… - University of Cambridge Primary School

This week we began our English unit by exploring the front cover of ‘The Midnight Fair’, The children make some wonderful observations:

“Where did the animals learn to behave like humans?”

“The contrast between light and dark makes the carousel look like it’s illuminated!”

We then explored the beautiful illustrations within the book to lead us into generating powerful vocabulary. We used thesauri to upgrade our adjectives and place these on our ‘spice-o-meters’. We finished the week with a short burst description of one of the illustrations from the books- we were very impressed!

In Maths we have been exploring the perimeter of 2D shapes. We began by drawing shapes and counting the squares all the way around the edge before moving on to adding measurements together.

In Art we explored colour. We used various media to create different shades of the same colour. The children were so engaged in this activity and they created some wonderful colour charts!

NEXT WEEK

English: We are exploring ‘The Midnight Fair’ by Gideon Sterer. Next week we will be writing persuasive letters convincing people to visit the fair.

Maths: Multiplying by multiples of 10 (4 x 5 = 20 so 4 x 50 = 200)

Reading: Our text this half term is The Wild Robot:

STEM: We will be learning about skeletons and nutrition this half term.

Project: Our project this half term is a geography focus: Climate. Here is a knowledge map that explains what we will be covering during our lessons: Y3Sp2 Climate knowledge map Next week we will be looking at extreme weather.

A note about PSHCE coverage for this half term:

Children will broaden their knowledge of different drug types and how they enter the bloodstream. They will develop their understanding of medicine use and the roles of health professionals and others who handle these drugs at work. They will further develop their awareness and understanding of safety rules relating to medicines and extend these to consider ways of

keeping safe with a broader range of items, including syringes. They will reflect upon realistic sources of support from trusted adults and consider how to tell and ask for help. They will focus on two legal recreational drugs – nicotine and alcohol – considering the effects, why some people choose to use them and skills for reducing risk and harm. They will consider the impact of influence and persuasion and practise skills to help manage these.
