Welcome to another rundown from the team in Year 1.
Maths Update:
We’ve had an exciting time in Maths this week as we have been further exploring subtraction! It has been really exciting seeing the children becoming more confident in using different manipulatives, such as tens frames and number lines, to support their understanding of subtraction.
We played a game with the children where we started with 5 to 10 objects. The child has to close their eyes and we would remove some of the objects. When the child opens their eye they have to work out how many were missing and use their knowledge of Math word problems to tell the story of what has happened. For example,
First, there were 10 pencils.
Then, my teacher took 3 pencils.
Now, there are 7 pencils.
10 – 3 = 7
How about you have a go playing this game at home with house hold objects.
Next week, we will be building on this subtraction knowledge as well as introducing fact families: the eight facts.
English Update:
This week in Year 1, we have been connecting our geography knowledge of the development of Eddington with our writing skills to begin to create a non-fiction book. This week was the first of this new book, where the children have written sentences around before Eddington was built, following the subject, verb, object structure.
Subject: This tells us who or what the sentence is about. It is often a person, animal, or thing.
Verb: The verb is the action or what is happening in the sentence.
Object: The object is the person or thing that receives the action of the verb.
For example:
Before Eddington (subject) was built (verb) there was fields (object).
Next week, the children will be writing the second part of their book that focuses on the constructions of Eddington. We encourage you to begin to expose your children to different construction machinery or tools to help better support their understanding.
Phonics Update:
In Phonics, we have been focusing on the ‘ow’ sound The children have been practicing identifying and spelling words with different ‘ow’ sounds, such as ‘ow’ and ‘ou’.
-ow- as in brown
-ou- as in ground
We are working on building their confidence with this sound and helping them apply it to both reading and writing.
Other notices:
Please remember that reading books get changed on Friday 13th December – it is important they are brought in on time to ensure your children are getting their new books. Books must be returned in their allocated plastic wallets.
We are are loving our Forest School experiences, and will continue to visit the Forest area for the rest of the half term! Please ensure your child brings their Forest School kit either the day before or on the morning of their trip. This will ensure they’re ready for a day of outdoor fun and learning in the forest. They must have waterproof clothing and footwear in case of rain.
Please ensure that long hair is tied up to avoid the spread of head lice.
