Phonics: We learnt the different spellings of the <ar> sound
ar- car, start, card, cart, jar, far
a-ask, plant, daft, raft, path, bath
al-calm, palm, balm, half, almond, calf
au-laugh, laughs, draught,
English: We learnt how to identify and use pronouns. We remembered to use the five parts of a story- introduction, build-up, resolution, ending and continued with writing our ‘Lost and Found’ stories. Have a go at home to write a short story using the five parts and think about some of the following challenges:
– Understanding the mismatch between picture and sentence – some children may focus on just one element (e.g., smiling face) and miss the emotional tone of the whole image.
– Limited emotional vocabulary – they might not have the language to articulate why something is “gloomy” or “cheeky.”
– Remembering all five story parts, especially if it’s the first time being introduced to story structure.
– Translating their drawing into written language – some children may draw confidently but struggle to turn ideas into a sentence.
– Spelling tricky descriptive words, which may limit the adjectives they choose to write.
– Sentence structure – children may forget capital letters, punctuation, or may write in fragments without a full sentence.
Maths: We revisited measurement and learnt about recognising and adding equal groups. Children were challenged to solve word problems.
STEM: We have had a lot of fun learning about magnets. Ask your child to share what materials were magnetic and non-magnetic. Vocabulary- repel, attract, force, magnetic field, metal, iron. Activity: Magnetic hunt around your home, what objects have magnets in them? e.g fridge door.
