Dear parents and careers,

We have had yet another fantastic week in Year 1. Our children are continuing to thoroughly enjoy their new Computing and DT learning.

It was wonderful to speak with so many families during learning conversations and celebrate the fantastic progress our children are making.

In English, we have introduced our new focus book ‘The sky garden’ by L. Sarah. Children have been identifying different characteristics of helpers in our community, using the word ‘and’ in a sentence, and finally, writing sentences using expanded noun phrases. English writing blog Wk3

In Maths, we have been measuring in centimeters using a ruler, solving one and two-step word problems involving height, length, mass and capacity. Maths sheets blog Wk3

In Phonics, we have been learning different spellings for the /air/ sound. We have identified the -air- spelling (as in hair), the -ere- spelling (as in where)

air- air, hair, pair, chair, stair, fair, hair

ere- where, there, anywhere, nowhere, somewhere, elsewhere,

Please help your child with spelling these words at home and as an extra challenge, write a few sentences using an adjective, adjective, noun- The black cat had a long curly tail.

Here are the sounds taught so far. Please review these with your child and continue to regularly revisit to consolidate learning. Phonics sounds and associated words Wk3

Other notices

We have finally had some lovely sunshine! Please send your child into school with a clearly named bottle of sun-screen lotion. This should be applied before coming to school and not at the classroom door as this then delays the start to our day. All sun hats to be clearly named too please. Both lotion and hats should remain at school for easy access. Please do not leave lotion in school bags.

School will be closed for Bank Holiday Monday 6th May.

We hope you all have a restful extra-long weekend!
