Hello all! Another week bursting with wonderful learning has flown by!

Phonics

During Phonics this week, we have continued our focus on the different spellings of the /or/ sound introduced last week.  As a reminder, here are the spellings we have been learning:     or – storm, aw – dawn, a – tall, ar –warning, au – haul, al – also.

English

In English, following on from last week’s Spring poetry, we have been using Michael Rosen’s ‘Woolly Saucepan’ as a model for writing poems featuring lists of silly objects. This allowed the children to build on their work on Materials in STEM earlier in the year, and independently write a diversity of creative, playful poems using stanzas. The children finished the week by performing their poetry for their peers. If you would like to continue the learning at home, you could challenge your children to search for objects at home/outdoors and use them as a stimulus for their own poetry. We would love to give children the opportunity to share them in class!

Maths

During Maths this week, we moved on to our Measurement topic. The children were introduced to height, length, mass and capacity, along with the related comparative vocabulary (longer and shorter; taller and shorter; heavier and lighter; empty, nearly empty, half full, nearly full and full). Children developed skills such as putting objects in order, using non-standard units to measure a range of objects, and using images of weighing scales to identify whether objects are heavier, equal, or lighter. Here is an example of an independent worksheet from the end of the week: Comparing height, length and weight done
