It has been another wonderful week here in Year 1.
Here is a run down of what we have been up to:
Maths Update:
This week in Maths, we have been learning about fact families and part-whole relationships. The children have been exploring how numbers are connected and how parts make up a whole, which is helping them develop a stronger understanding of addition and subtraction. Explore part whole together at home here.
English Update:
In English, the children are working hard to write their own books based on the wonderful picture-book ” Martha Maps It Out”. They are using their creativity to develop exciting new adventures! Additionally, the children are continuing to learn about subjects and objects in sentences, which is helping them strengthen their grammar skills and sentence structure.
Phonics Update:
In Phonics, we have been focusing on the ‘e’ sound The children have been practicing identifying and spelling words with different ‘e’ sounds, such as ‘ai’, ‘ea’, and ‘e’.
-e- as in bed
-ea- as in ready
-ai- as in against
We are working on building their confidence with this sound and helping them apply it to both reading and writing.
Science Update: Learning About Grouping Animals
In Science this week, Year 1 have been exploring the fascinating world of animals and learning about the six main animal groups. Here’s a quick overview of what we’ve been discovering:
- Mammals – These are warm-blooded animals that have hair or fur and give birth to live young (with a few exceptions like the platypus). Most mammals feed their young with milk.
- Birds – Birds are warm-blooded animals with feathers and wings. They lay eggs and most are able to fly, although some, like penguins, cannot.
- Reptiles – Reptiles are cold-blooded animals that usually have scaly skin. They lay eggs and include animals like snakes, turtles, and lizards.
- Amphibians – These animals start their lives in water but often move to land as adults. Amphibians, such as frogs, toads, and newts, have smooth skin and are cold-blooded.
- Fish – Fish live in water, have scales, and breathe through gills. They are cold-blooded and lay eggs. Some examples include goldfish, sharks, and salmon.
- Invertebrates – these creatures do not have backbones. Some live on land and some in water. Did you know that jellyfish are invertebrates?
The children have been learning about the characteristics of each group. We can’t wait to continue exploring the animal kingdom!
Here’s what’s happening in Year 1 next week:
Forest School
We are excited to be heading to Forest School again next week! Please ensure your child brings their Forest School kit either the day before or on the morning of their trip. This will ensure they’re ready for a day of outdoor fun and learning in the forest. Please bear in mind – we go out whatever the weather.
Book Change – Friday, November 29th
Books will be changed on Friday, November 29th. Please ensure that your child has returns their current books on this day so they can pick up new ones.
Other Reminders:
- Weather: As the weather gets colder, please ensure your child has appropriate clothing for both Forest School and the classroom.
- PE Kits: Please remember to send in PE kits on PE days.
