Dear parents and carers,
We’ve had another busy, exciting (and rather cold!) week in Year 1.
In Phonics, we continued exploring the /e/ sound and practised reading and writing words such as search, friend, and mend. The children have been working hard to spot this sound in their reading books and are becoming much more confident using it in their own writing. They’ve also been working hard in their dictations and are much more confident with writing sentences. Practising simple sentences via dictation at home is an excellent way to help your children with their phonics. A suggested sentence:
We shut the gate on the way to the shops.
In Writing, we have been learning about nouns and adjectives and the children enjoyed going on a noun hunt. We have also continued to make our own picture books. The children have been planning the beginning and middle and are excited to start writing their stories next week.
In Geography, we have been learning about the features of physical and human geography. The children enjoyed going around the school and hunting for human and physical geographical features. On December 3rd we are planning to take a walk around Eddington to spot these features in our local community. They are becoming fantastic little geographers! We have also been enjoying our new Eddington inspired pizzerias!
In Maths, we focused on writing number sentences and used part–part–whole models to help us understand how numbers can be split and combined. The children have shown excellent reasoning skills and are getting quicker at explaining their thinking.Maths – Aut 2 W3
