Welcome to another rundown from the team in Year 1.
Maths Update:
We’ve had an exciting time in Maths this week as we begin exploring word problems and introduce subtraction! Our little learners are making great strides as they develop their mathematical thinking and problem-solving skills.
By practicing writing simple stories to describe how things happen in order. We’re using the words first, then, and now to describe events in sequence. For example:
- First, there were 5 marbles
- Then, Tom gave me 4 more.
- Now, I have 9 marbles.
Why not have a go at finding your own first, then, now maths stories at home? Or take a look at what we have been doing in class? Work together on simple word problems: “If you have 6 apples and give 2 away, how many apples are left?”
This week, we also began learning about subtraction, which is very exciting!
English Update:
This week in Year 1, we have been focusing on building strong sentence-writing skills. A key area we’ve explored is understanding the basic structure of a sentence. Every sentence has three important parts: the subject, the verb, and the object.
- Subject: This tells us who or what the sentence is about. It is often a person, animal, or thing.
- Verb: The verb is the action or what is happening in the sentence.
- Object: The object is the person or thing that receives the action of the verb.
For example:
- The cat (subject) chased (verb) the mouse (object).
We encourage you to practice together at home by helping your child identify the subject, verb, and object in simple sentences. This can be a fun activity by using toys, pictures, or daily activities to create sentences like: “Dad (subject) baked (verb) a cake (object).”
Phonics Update:
In Phonics, we have been focusing on the ‘e’ sound The children have been practicing identifying and spelling words with different ‘e’ sounds, such as ‘ai’, ‘ea’, and ‘e’.
-e- as in Ben
-ea- as in steady
-ai- as in said
We are working on building their confidence with this sound and helping them apply it to both reading and writing.
Other notices:
- We are are loving our Forest School experiences, and will continue to visit the Forest area for the rest of the half term! Please ensure your child brings their Forest School kit either the day before or on the morning of their trip. This will ensure they’re ready for a day of outdoor fun and learning in the forest. They must have waterproof clothing and footwear in case of rain.
- Please ensure that long hair is tied up to avoid the spread of head lice.
