It has been another exciting and productive week in Year 1, filled with curiosity, creativity and collaboration. In STEM, the children became young engineers as they explored different materials and predicted which would be most suitable for building strong houses and sturdy bridges. They enjoyed testing their ideas, sharing their reasoning and thinking carefully about the properties of materials. It was wonderful to see the children working scientifically and developing their problem-solving skills through hands-on learning experiences.
In Writing, the children have been developing their editing and proofreading skills. They are learning how to carefully review their work, identify improvements and enhance their writing by making thoughtful changes to vocabulary, punctuation and sentence structure. The children are beginning to understand that great writing often involves revisiting and refining their ideas and it has been lovely to see them taking pride in improving their work independently. In Phonics, we have been focusing on the /ue/ sound, exploring words such as unit, crude and pew. The children have been working hard to recognise, read and spell words containing this sound while continuing to build their confidence in applying phonics skills independently. They have also been practising sentence dictation, carefully listening to sounds, segmenting words and applying correct spelling and punctuation within their writing. It has been wonderful to see the children showing increasing confidence and resilience during these activities. In Maths, the children have continued exploring multiplication through practical grouping activities. They are developing their understanding of equal groups and are becoming more familiar with arrays, recognising how many groups there are and how many objects are in each group. Through hands-on resources and visual representations, the children are building strong foundations for multiplication and beginning to explain their mathematical thinking with growing confidence. Next week
The school will be stepping back in time as we transform into Tudor England to celebrate the life and works of William Shakespeare. In Year 1, the children will be exploring A Midsummer Night’s Dream through the theme of a magical midsummer garden, immersing themselves in storytelling, drama and imaginative activities inspired by Shakespeare’s famous play. There may even be a few royals wandering around the quad as we embrace the excitement and wonder of Tudor times together!

The phonics books relate to the spellings we have been learning in class so please use them for any spelling practice alongside the reading. Please make sure you return books on the day.
