Year 1 Weekly Blog – Week 2
We’ve had another fantastic week in Year 1! The children have continued to show great curiosity and enthusiasm for all our learning, and we’re so proud of how well they’re working together and sharing their ideas.
In Phonics, we’ve been learning about the /e/ sound in words such as said, friend, quest and chest. We’ve also been exploring polysyllabic words – longer words with more than one syllable – like himself, invent and catfish. The children have enjoyed spotting these sounds and syllables in their reading and using them in their writing. Please keep practising at home by listening for the /e/ sound and clapping out syllables in words you find together.
In Maths, we’ve been learning how to use part–part–whole models to understand how numbers can be split and combined. The children have worked really hard to represent numbers in different ways. You can support this at home by drawing part-part whole models and practising number bonds (for example, 3 + 2 = 5) and talking about how two parts make a whole. In Writing, we’ve started making our own picture books. The children have been planning their characters and settings and thinking carefully about what will happen in their stories. There’s been so much creativity and excitement in the classroom as our young authors begin to bring their ideas to life.
In Science, we’ve been looking at bug hotels. We talked about why insects need safe spaces to live and explored what materials make a good bug habitat. The children can’t wait to start creating their own bug hotels soon – thank you for all the cardboard boxes you’ve been sending in!
In Geography, we’ve been learning about Eddington past and present. The children compared old and new photographs to see what the area was like only a few years ago and how it’s changed. They were fascinated to spot familiar places and notice how buildings, roads and green spaces have developed.
It’s been a busy and exciting week full of learning and discovery. We’re so impressed with how engaged and enthusiastic the children have been – well done, Year 1!
