Well it’s certainly been a hot one but Year 1 have taken it in their stride and have had lots of fun in the sunshine. We’ve enjoyed al fresco lessons, calmer afternoons, a party in the shade and we were all very excited by the kind donations of ice lollies from Focus – thank you very much!
In Phonics, we have been looking at all the ways to spell the sound ‘l’. They’ve been blown away to learn that there are so many ways e.g. whistle, pedal, full, model, pupil, petrol, along.
In Writing, we have been continuing our instruction booklets. The children are very excited to share their instructions with you all at Family Friday.
In Maths, we have been comparing numbers to 100 using greater than, less than and equal to signs. This is something that is great to practice at home. The children should recognise when it is more useful to compare ones and when it is more useful to compare tens.
In Science, we have been learning about the senses. This week we focused on sound and conducted an experiment where we measured how loud a whistle changing different variables such as distance from the whistle and with our eyes open and closed.
In DT, we have been learning about bridges and this week we made a collage of a bridge.

- Please ensure you child has a hat and suncream when the weather is hot.
- Fruit requests: Next week we will be doing Taste-Ed and will be tasting exotic fruit. If you could kindly donate any exotic fruit for the class to try to please bring it in on Tuesday. Please also let us know if your child has an allergies to fruit.
- Summer Reading Challenge: Cambridge Libraries will be hosting another summer reading challenge. The children have had an assembly about the challenge. If your child would like to sign up, please take them to a local library from Friday 4th July and ask to sign up with reception. They need to read 6 books and will receive a certificate and medal in September if they complete the challenge so it is well worth doing!
