Dear parents and carers,
It’s been another lively and wonderfully productive week in Year 1!
In Phonics, we have been concentrating on the /ow/ sound. The children have been reading and writing a range of /ow/ words such as clown, cloud, owl and growl. They are getting much better at recognising this sound and looking for the different spellings. Their confidence with sentence writing during dictation sessions is also growing. Practising short sentences at home makes a big difference. Here is a suggested one for this week:

In Maths, our focus has been on number bonds within 10 and creating number sentences. We used part–part–whole models to show how numbers link together, and the children are beginning to explain their thinking more clearly. A little extra practice at home would be very helpful. In Geography, we continued to explore human and physical features. The children enjoyed hunting the classroom for images for human and physical features and discussing s and discussing the differences. Next week, we are excited to explore this in Eddington.
In Science, we learned more about animal groups and how we classify them. The children enjoyed sorting animals and talking about the characteristics that make each group unique.
In RE, we continued our discussions about gift-giving, thinking about why people give gifts and what makes a gift thoughtful.
Other notices
Please remember to ensure your children come to school with adequate winter clothing, particularly for next Wednesday when we will be walking around Eddington for our Geography field trip.
