Year 1 Weekly Blog – First Week Back!
What a lovely first week back we’ve had in Year 1! The children have settled back into school routines beautifully and have been full of enthusiasm for our new topics.
In Phonics, we’ve been exploring the /ur/ sound in words such as burn, kerb, pearl, squirm, and girl. The children have been practising spotting the sound in their reading and using it in their writing. Please try to look out for this sound and practise it with your children.
In Maths, we’ve been learning all about number lines. The children have been working hard to use number lines to help them count, add, and find missing numbers. It’s been wonderful to see their confidence growing as they jump along the line to solve problems. BBC Bitesize has some excellent activities to help support your children with this: here
In Writing, we’ve started a very exciting new project — creating our own picture books! This week, we’ve been exploring a range of different picture books to get ideas for our own stories. The children have loved sharing their favourites and thinking about what makes a great picture book.
In Science, our new topic is Mini Beasts. We’ve begun by talking about what we already know about insects and creepy-crawlies, and we’re looking forward to learning more about their habitats and how they move and live.
We’ve also started our first Geography topic, where we’re learning all about Eddington. The children have been thinking about what makes our local area special and have enjoyed spotting familiar places on maps and photographs.
It’s been a brilliant start to the half-term, we’re so proud of how eager and curious the children have been in all their learning.
