Welcome Back!
We’ve had a fantastic first week of Summer Term 2, and our Reception children in Pumpkins, Acorns, and Sunflower classes have been fully engaged in their learning adventures!
Handwriting
This week we’ve been focusing on the “Jumper Family” of letters. Children have been practicing these letter formations alongside using our “Animal Positions” approach, which helps them remember the correct flow and positioning. We’ve noticed great progress in their pencil grip and letter formation!
Phonics
We’ve been working on our symbol search skills with sounds /wh/, /ck/, /th/, /ff/, and /ss/. The children have been developing their word building abilities with the /ng/ sound, practicing words like “sing,” “wing,” “swing,” “bang,” “bong,” and “song.” We’ve also introduced sound swapping activities and completed whole class sentence dictation: “The class sang the long song.” The children are making excellent progress with their reading and spelling!
English & Story Time
Our focus text this week has been “The Three Little Pigs”! We began the week with an exciting mystery suitcase containing sticks, straw, and bricks – the children loved being detectives and working out which story character these clues belonged to. We’ve been reading the story together, acting it out, and recreating scenes during our playful learning time. The children have been engaging with post-it note activities to label story elements and are developing their comprehension skills beautifully.
Maths
We’ve been focusing on reviewing and deepening our understanding of comparing quantities up to 10. Children have been practicing subitising skills and learning to compare groups using mathematical language like “more than,” “fewer than,” and “equal to.” They’ve been working with different mathematical equipment to model their thinking and developing their sense of number magnitude – understanding that 8 is a lot more than 2, but 4 is only a little bit more than 2.
Art
We’ve been reviewing and developing our attachment techniques this week, exploring different ways to join materials together securely. The children have been experimenting with various methods and building their creative construction skills.
Music
Our daily singing has included “Tommy Thumb” and “Andy Pandy” – the children love starting their day with these familiar songs that help develop their rhythm and coordination skills.

Weather Preparations: As the weather changes, please ensure that your child has:
- A waterproof coat
- A named water bottle (filled with water only)
- A sun hat
- Sun cream applied before school (and a named bottle in their bag for reapplication if needed)
- A set of spare clothes in their bag (in case of water play or accidents)
