Dear Reception Families,
We hope this update finds you well! The children have been busy with lots of exciting learning activities this week, and we wanted to share some highlights with you.
Maths Focus: Exploring Doubles and Equal Groups
This week in mathematics, our young mathematicians have been exploring the concept of equivalence and doubles. They’ve been:
- Using their fingers to create and recognize doubles patterns
- Distributing objects into equal groups during our “Fair Shares” game
- Learning to identify even and odd numbers through fun Numberblocks activities
- Using rekenreks to visualize doubles patterns
The children are becoming confident using mathematical language such as “equal,” “double,” and they’re practicing our special sentence pattern: “___ is made from ___ and ___; double ___ is ___.”
Phonics
During our phonics sessions we continued to work on the ‘voiced’ and ‘un-voiced’ /th/ sound and the /ck/ sound.
The children have been reading, building and writing the following words-
thump, them, snack, thin, thud, thank, theft, with, clock, them, this, that
They also tried to independently write the sentences-
The cloth was much too thin.
His chest thumps, his fists clench. (Support needed to add the comma)
Handwriting Focus
Our handwriting practice has been focusing the following letters.
l – Down-bump. Flick.
i- Down-bump. Flick. Pen off- put on the dot.
t- Down-bump. Flick. Pen off- Push the line across.
u- Down. Push (along the ground). Up. Down- bump. Flick.
TastEd
In TastEd this week we explored soft, hard, smooth and bumpy foods. The children explored foods using only their sense of touch initially and discussed how each hidden object felt. Later, we revealed the foods and all children were invited to try if they would like to.
This week, we tried pineapple, mushrooms, peas and celery.
PSHCE
This week in PSHCE, we’ve been exploring:
Feelings, emotions and how we should respond if we were to get lost. The children discussed their own experiences comparing how they asked for help and how they might do things differently if it ever happened again.
The children showed a fantastic understanding about how to keep themselves safe even when things go wrong!
Family Friday Reminder – May 23rd at 2:30pm
We’re looking forward to welcoming you to our Family Friday session this coming Friday, May 23rd at 2:30pm!
During this session, you’ll have the opportunity to see what your children have been learning and join them in the Art room to celebrate the end of our D&T project- Botley City.
We’re excited to share that at the end of this week’s Family Friday session, you will be welcome to take home your child’s Design & Technology project if you wish. The children have worked incredibly hard on these creations and are very proud of what they’ve accomplished! Projects can be collected after 3pm when all families have had chance to enjoy the display.
