Summer 1: Week 1

What a wonderful start to our Summer term! Even though we only had three days at school this week, our Reception children in Pumpkins, Acorns, and Sunflower classes have been incredibly busy with exciting new learning.

Handwriting: We’ve been reviewing writing positions and pencil grip, focusing on the letter formations for v, w, x, z, and k. Children have been practicing these through our “slider family” activities.

Phonics: We’ve introduced the /sh/ sound this week, learning how it appears at the beginning and end of words like “shed,” “dash,” and “fresh.” Children practiced building and reading words with this sound.

Summer 1 Project- Building the World: We’ve had a fantastic introduction to Botley the robot! Children have begun exploring how to give instructions (algorithms) to make Botley move. They’ve discovered how to use directional language like forwards, backwards, left, and right. The children were then inspired to use their D&T skills to build a city for Botley. They are all busy designing and planning their own building to contribute to the city. We look forward to sharing and celebrating this with you on Family Friday 23rd May at 2.30pm.

Maths: Children have been ordering numbers 1-10 on number tracks and using comparison language like “more than” and “less than.” They’ve also played some fun games to help identify missing numbers in sequences.

Junk Modelling Resources: We’re continuing to create our city this half term and would greatly appreciate any clean junk modeling materials you can send in (please ensure items haven’t contained nuts).

Building Photos: If you haven’t already shared photographs of buildings that interest your child, there’s still plenty of time! Please refer to our previous Tapestry post for more information on this.
