This Week in Reception: Musical Adventures with Mozart! 🎵

Hello Reception families!

What a fantastic week we’ve had exploring music and sounds! This week, our learning has been inspired by the wonderful composer Mozart from our “Little People Big Dreams” series.

Musical Discoveries

We’ve been diving into the world of classical music and learning all about Mozart. The children watched some brilliant videos, including a fun Horrible Histories clip about opera and listened to Mozart’s Horn Concerto No. 4. It’s been lovely hearing them talk about music, musicians, composers, and how performances work. Some of the children have even been sharing their own musical experiences from home!

Phonics

In phonics, we’ve been working hard on revisiting unit 2 and 3 sounds: n, o, p, g, c, h, and b. The children have been practicing building words like “map,” “hat,” and “cab,” and have been doing brilliantly with reading simple sentences. We’re also focusing on our high-frequency words: is, a, the, and I.

Our most recent unit of study is unit 4:

Writing for Pleasure

The children have been thinking about what makes illustrations great, learning to tell stories even when they can’t read all the words yet, and discovering how to improve their writing by reading it back like real authors. It’s amazing to see their confidence growing as storytellers.

Maths

In maths, we’ve been singing “1, 2, 3, 4, 5, Once I Caught a Fish Alive” and working on recognizing numbers and making equal amounts. The children have been practicing showing numbers with their fingers, clapping equal amounts, and learning that even when we rearrange objects, the quantity stays the same – a tricky but important concept!

Our Daily Song

Every day before home time, we’ve been gathering around with our lycra and singing “A Little Frog in the Pond” with a frog puppet. The children love making the frog jump by moving the lycra up and down when we sing “hippety, hippety hop!”

Important Reminder: PE After Half Term

We’ll be starting PE sessions after the February half term, so please ensure your child has their PE kit in school. We’ll be doing some sessions outside, and as it may be a little colder than we’d hoped, please make sure their kit is weather appropriate.
