It’s been another fantastic week in Reception.
Phonics
In phonics, this week we have continued working on the bridging unit which helps to address some of the new phonics themes that the children will encounter in year one.

Traditional Tales
We are enjoying our learning project ‘Traditional Tales’. This week we have enjoyed looking at the story of Jack and the Beanstalk. We have used our story table in each classroom to build a tall beanstalk and imagine what might be at the top, and we have been enjoying completing wordsearches and sequencing the story too.
Writing for Pleasure
In Writing for Pleasure, we have continued to make our book project, ‘Once upon a time books’. We have been going through the proof-reading process to make sure that we have remembered to write on all of the pages inside the book, including capital letters, finger spaces and a full stop at the end. The children have also been making their own ‘free writing’ books and been lovely to see the children’s enthusiasm for writing and sharing their own stories.
Maths
This week’s maths focus has been on automatically recalling number bonds and on deepening children’s automaticity with some number facts. Throughout the year, the children have been focusing on number relationships and on the composition of number in a variety of contexts. They have had repeated practice of exploring the ‘numbers within’ the numbers to 10. This week’s activities have helped them to further develop their familiarity with these number relationships.

Mud Day 2026
We have absolutely loved our Mud Day sessions this week! We have been making mud pictures, mud pies, mud volcanos, mud whiskers, and having mud baths too! What a glorious muddy time!
School Show
Our Year 6 buddies are taking part in a UCPS summer production of Matilda! This year, the school show will take place in the Great Hall at The Leys for two evenings of Matilda magic on 13th and 14th July 2026, 6pm-7pm. Tickets will be sold via The Leys booking office. It would be great to see any many members of the school community there as possible! Tickets are priced at £7. All booking enquiries should be directed to The Leys box office rather than the school office.
