We have had a very hot but a very fun week in Reception!
Phonics
In phonics, this week we have continued working on the bridging unit which helps to address some of the new phonics themes that the children will encounter in year one.

Traditional Tales
We are enjoying our learning project ‘Traditional Tales’. This week we have enjoyed looking at the story of The Gingerbread Man. We have used our story table in each classroom to re-tell the story using our own words using little puppets, and we have been enjoying watching a Musical Storytime and singing the gingerbread song. Writing for Pleasure
In Writing for Pleasure, we have continued to make our book project, ‘Once upon a time books’. We have finished writing all of the pages inside the book, and we are starting to think about the proof-reading process next. We are working hard to remember our capital letters, finger spaces and a full stop at the end. It has been lovely to see the children’s enthusiasm for writing and sharing their stories!
Maths
This week’s maths focus has been on assessing and deepening the children’s understanding of our counting system. The activities have provided opportunities for further counting experiences, and have built their knowledge of accurate counting to 20 and beyond.

Mud Day 2026
We are all really looking forward to Mud Day 2026! Here are the session slots for Reception:
Monday 29th June – Acorns
Wednesday 1st July – Sunflowers
Friday 3rd July – Pumpkins
Please bring your child to school wearing clothes that you are happy to get dirty, bring an old towel, a full set of clean uniform and a named bag.
School Show
Our Year 6 buddies are taking part in a UCPS summer production of Matilda! This year, the school show will take place in the Great Hall at The Leys for two evenings of Matilda magic on 13th and 14th July 2026, 6pm-7pm. Tickets will be sold via The Leys booking office. It would be great to see any many members of the school community there as possible! Tickets are priced at £7. All booking enquiries should be directed to The Leys box office rather than the school office.
