We have had another fantastic week in Reception!
Phonics
In phonics, this week we have continued working on the bridging unit which helps to address some of the new phonics themes that the children will encounter in year one.
You can find some Sounds Write videos on our website, where you can see Miss Johal teaching the concepts we have been looking at. We have been looking at the idea of same sound, different spelling, which you can find on the link below.
Helping Your Child at Home – University of Cambridge Primary School
Traditional Tales
We are enjoying our learning project ‘Traditional Tales’. This week we have enjoyed looking at the story of The Enormous Turnip. We have used our story table in each classroom to order pictures from the story in the correct order, and re-tell the story using our own words using little puppets.
Writing for Pleasure
In Writing for Pleasure, we have continued to make our book project, ‘Once upon a time books’. We been working on some of the inside pages of our books. We have been thinking about how to say our sentence slowly to hear the sounds, remembering to use finger spaces and making sure we use a capital letter at the beginning and a full stop at the end. The children are really enthusiastic about writing their books which is lovely to see, and we can’t wait to find out how all the stories end!
Forest School
We all really enjoyed our second session of Reception forest school this week. We had a great time searching for minibeasts in the forest. We searched under logs, in trees, and all around the forest space. We used our identification posters and books to find out what each minibeast was called, and we even drew some pictures of them too. The children showed really lovely curiosity for the world around them an interest in living creatures, which was lovely to see.
Maths
This week’s maths focus is on deepening the children’s understanding of how to compare quantities. We have compared quantities in different contexts, and the children have focused on the numerosity of the group (how many there are) rather than the size or spatial arrangement of the objects. We have also been thinking about one more and one fewer than a given number and using different items to show this.
