Here’s what your children will be exploring and learning this week in Reception.
Our Focus Story: All Through the Night
This week, we’re reading a fascinating book called All Through the Night, which explores the different jobs people do while we’re sleeping. We’ll be talking about night-time workers like nurses, bakers, and cleaners who help keep our world running smoothly.
Chat at home: Does anyone in your family work at night? What happens in your home when it’s dark outside? These are great conversation starters with your child!
Phonics Adventures
We’re continuing our phonics journey by learning the sounds n, o, and p this week. Your child will be practicing reading and spelling simple words like “pin,” “pot,” “nap,” and “tip.” By Friday, they’ll even be writing a whole sentence: “A pot is on top.”
Children have also been learning the high frequency words /is/ and /a/. To help support your child when reading these words, simply point to the word and say ‘this spelling is a or this spelling is /i/ /z/ is’.
Unit 2 Video:
Maths
This week in maths, we’re focusing on the numbers 2, 3, and 4. The children will be:
- Recognizing small amounts without counting (we call this “subitising”)
- Showing numbers on their fingers in different ways
- Listening to sounds and identifying how many they hear
- Making patterns with 4 objects and describing them using words like “on top,” “at the bottom,” and “next to”
Home activity: Hide 2, 3, or 4 small toys under a cloth. Give your child a quick peek, then ask them to show you on their fingers how many they saw!
Daily Music and Movement
Each morning, we’re singing action songs including “Copy Me,” “One Finger, One Finger,” and “Chop Chop Chopitty Chop.” These songs help develop rhythm, coordination, and listening skills. Please see tapestry for videos of how to practise these songs at home.
Handwriting Practice
We’re learning to form the letters m, i, t, a, and s using fun phrases like “down-bump, flick” to help us remember the movements. Each letter belongs to a special family with its own story!
Learning About Fairness
In our PSHCE (Personal, Social, Health and Citizenship Education) sessions, we’re exploring what it means to be fair and unfair. Through stories about a puppet named Sammy, we’ll discuss how our choices affect others and how we can be kind friends.
Drawing Club
We’re reading Elephant Island by Leo Timmers and imagining what our own special islands might look like. What would your child put on their island?
How You Can Help at Home
- Practice the letter sounds we’ve learned: s, a, t, i, m, n, o, p
- Count objects around the house using groups of 2, 3, and 4
- Talk about jobs people do at night
- Encourage your child to show you numbers on their fingers
- Read together every day, even if just for 5-10 minutes.

- Sunflowers Class: Thursday 11th December at 9amDress rehearsals will be taking place in WK 5, if you have been told that your child needs a costume for the nativity then please bring these in on Monday 1st December or Tuesday 2nd December. Please bring costumes in a named bag. Thank you.
