This week in Meadows, we learned all about dental health, and came up with ways to keep our baby (and permanent) teeth healthy: ‘drink water’, ‘not too much sugar’ ‘clean our teeth’, ‘eat carrots’! The children brought in their toothbrushes and had fun brushing their teeth for precisely 2 minutes with their peers using a pea sized amount of toothpaste!
The story of the week was ‘What the Ladybird Heard’ by Julia Donaldson, which follows two thieves with a not-so-clever plan to steal the farmer’s fine prize cow. Little did they know that the tiniest, quietest creature of all had overheard their plot, and she had a plan of her own . . .
We also read the story ‘The Very Shellfish Crocodile’ by Faustin Charles, which touches upon the sensitive concepts of empathy and sharing. When reading such books, it is a good practice to support the children in reflecting on the personal experiences they might have inside or outside the nursery so they can start making links between the things they read and real life. Such an approach can transform a simple story into a powerful learning moment and underpin the children’s understanding of soft skills like cooperation, teamwork, developing empathy or sharing.
The children also had numerous opportunities to say number words in sequence while getting busy with several activities inside and outside e.g. making puzzles, counting their friends on the carpet, sorting out food that make our teeth happy or measuring ingredients for their chocolate soup in the mud kitchen.
Outside, we continued making our birdfeeders and listening to the birds’ lovely songs. We also did some cloud spotting, and we were thrilled to observe rapid weather changes: from sunny spells to intense heavy rainfall!
