This week in Meadows we welcomed some sunny days and what, hopefully, seemed to be the beginning of Spring!
This term’s theme is ‘All creatures, great and small’ and we introduced the children to Mini Beasts which are small creatures with no backbones, aka invertebrates! What an interesting word! The book of the week was: ‘The very Hungry Caterpillar’ by Eric Carle, which follows a very hungry caterpillar that eats a variety of foods before curling in its cocoon and eventually becoming a butterfly. The children acted out the story using lovely props and a cardboard caterpillar which they painted themselves!
We have also been talking about our external body parts, playing games and singing songs to name as many as we can and also discussing the function behind each one of them. The children were amazed to realise that our bodies not only consume food but can transform it into energy and dispose the waste too!
Outside, we looked for some real mini beasts and used our spades to dig and discover all kinds of worms. We also spotted a few snail shells and observed their beautiful spiral-shaped structure. The sunny weather also allowed our little friends to build with blocks and crates to create small cities and then navigate around them using printed maps!
Next week we will be celebrating World Book Day on Thursday, and we would like to invite you to a fun reading game! Children are encouraged to wrap up their favourite book and then bring in a clue for their friends to guess which book they have wrapped up. We will then open it together and enjoy reading it with friends.
Here are some ideas to inspire you:
If your child’s favourite book is The Room on the Broom they might bring in a witch’s hat as their clue.
If your child’s favourite book is Stickman they could bring a stick!
If your child’s favourite book is The Tiger Who Came to Tea they might bring in a t-shirt with a tiger on it or a picture of a teapot!
