What if Jack and the Beanstalk was more than just a fairy tale? It can also be a fun way for children to explore STEM!
During the second week of reading this story, children explored science, technology, engineering, and maths while enjoying the magic of storytelling.
We started by retelling the story and asking: How far is the sky? Children learned that the edge of space, called the Kármán line, is around 100 km above Earth. We compared this to Mount Everest, which is around 9 km high, and discovered Jack would need to climb nearly 10 Everests to reach space! Children enjoyed imagining themselves as astronauts and creating astronaut crafts and spaceships.
As Jack climbed higher, we explored the clouds. Children observed the sky, talked about different cloud shapes and colours, predicted the weather, and recorded their observations in a weather journal.
We then asked: Can a plant really reach the sky? Children learned about Hyperion, one of the tallest trees in the world at nearly 100 metres, and compared it to Jack’s giant beanstalk through playdough creations and discussions.
Through storytelling and hands-on activities, children developed their curiosity, problem-solving skills, and understanding of STEM. Jack and the Beanstalk became a wonderful way to explore the world around us.
