Our next traditional tale is Jack and the Beanstalk. It follows Jack’s adventure climbing up a beanstalk into another world above the clouds where he comes across a Giant! We are having conversations with the children about things that are right to do and things that are wrong. The class opinion is split, some children think it is not ok to steal a hen, while others think that Jack and his mum were very hungry and they needed the money to eat, so it was ok.
Have a chat at home: “If you were Jack, what would you do when you saw the hen that lays golden eggs?” This question opens the door for problem-solving, moral reasoning, empathy.
In our key groups, we are discussing going to school, talking about uniforms, visiting the lunch hall, the PE hall and visiting the Reception classes.
We aim to keep to our usual daily routine in nursery while building slowly up to next term. Starting school is an exciting time for the children but can also be time of worry and anxiety. Here are some tips to make starting school easier for everyone:
Being independent: encourage and support your child to be independent is one of the best ways to prepare them.
Encourage them to get dressed and undressed in playful ways:
Can you put socks on the teddy?
Can you pair up the shoes?
Can you get dressed while I close my eyes?
Encourage them to use their cutlery for eating, show them how to cut up food with a knife and let them have a go!
Support your child going to the toilet on their own and remind them to wash their hands after they finished.
Reading, talking and having fun!
Share stories with your child. Talk about what is happening in the pictures and what might happen next?
Encourage them to chat as they play. Children learn best through play! Model turn taking, language and social interactions and listening games such as I spy.
Parents are their children’s first educators! Go to the new parent meetings, the stay and play sessions to find out as much as you can about the school and the class!
