What a busy and joyful week we have had in Nursery!
During Key Times and small group activities, we focused on encouraging children to use longer sentences, especially our EAL learners. Staff modelled language, added new vocabulary and supported children to describe what they were doing. Talking boxes, social stories about personal space, and lots of conversation helped build confidence in speaking and listening. We also learned a song to support our understanding of personal space, consent and boundaries.
Throughout our continuous provision, we explored numbers in the environment, spotting numerals on everyday objects such as food packages and toy boxes. You can enjoy an ‘I spy…’ game with your child at home asking them to see if they can spot any numbers on items they are familiar with e.g. their shampoo bottle or their cereal package!
Story time continues to be a highlight of the day! This week’s stories were: Tree, Seasons come Seasons go by Patricia Hegarty with wonderful illustrations to take us on a journey throughout the seasons, and the Great Animal Race to mark the beginning of Lunar New Year Celebrations!
A special highlight this week was learning about Lunar New Year. The children watched videos, listened to the story, and explored traditions such as dragon and lion dancing, ribbon and scarf dancing, music making with drums and tambourines, and even participating in a Dragon dance! We also discussed how families celebrate with special clothes, food and dancing. This helped children understand that different families have different customs and beliefs that are important and meaningful. Please visit our separate tapestry post to find out how much fun we had!
As part of our ‘The Languages we speak’ project, we will be celebrating the Greek culture and language during the first week after the holiday! Mrs Rodoula is very excited to be sharing customs and some traditional snacks to celebrate her favourite country in the whole world!
