Our last week before half term break has been exciting and full of interesting learning!
We read the book Tree: Seasons Come, Seasons Go by Patricia Hegarty, which invites us to explore how nature changes throughout the four seasons through vibrant illustrations of a Tree! The children shared wonderful ideas about the colours each season brings and brought their inspiring ideas to the crafts table later! Clouds carrying rain, snow, rainbows and all kinds of weather were in full swing throughout the whole week!
Our maths learning involved spotting numerals! The children got excited about a number scavenger hunt which took place in the classroom and were very good at identifying and spotting all the different items around the room that represented or had numbers on them! You can extend this game at home by asking your child to spot numbers e.g. on a food package or a wall thermometer and discuss what it might represent.
We also recapped our knowledge of ‘now’ and ‘then’, introducing the words ‘present’ and ‘past’ and we played games on the carpet with photos of old and new things. The children were brilliant at identifying things from the past e.g. dinosaurs who have become ‘extinct’ and putting them in the right box! Outside, we worked on our hand-eye coordination skills as we observed the ice melting while we were painting it with different colours. We noticed it takes time for the paint to blend in the ice and we watched the colours mixing and creating new colours!
During our nature walk we talked about fossils and how they can provide us with important information about things that lived or existed long ago! We even pretended to be paleontologists and explored how a fossil might be created in the mud using leaves, sticks and a dinosaur’s bone!!!
