This week in Meadows we kept ourselves busy by making patchwork elephants and rainbows inside and outside using all kinds of resources: pencils and markers, tissue paper and pom poms, chalks and brushes! We got inspired by our weekly story which was: Elmer and the Rainbow by David Mckee, a book with enchanting illustrations about a kind elephant who decided to give his own colours to a colourless rainbow! What a kind gesture! But guess what… ‘Some things you can give and give and not lose any!’.
The children had opportunities to count things that cannot be seen or moved during free play or circle time e.g. things we learned about dinosaurs or the doors on the cupboard. We also practiced our singing voices with counting songs e.g. 5 Little speckled frogs or 5 Little monkeys. You can practice singing parts (1-3) or whole songs like these with your child while using your fingers to show the remaining number of animals. Using visual props can also support the children’s learning, especially if English is their second language. We got very creative during our circle time using laminated pictures of frogs or puppets to act out the songs we were singing!
Outside, we used our new litter pickers to collect litter or small toys from our playground to protect our natural environment!
This term we have also been working on our rhyming skills by listening to rhyming stories and playing rhyming games e.g. Changing a word to a well-known song: ‘Twinkle twinkle chocolate bar, how I wonder how tasty you are’ or ‘Rickety rackety rark … we all clap after Mark’ to get the children thinking about words and rhymes.
As we move on to the final week of the term, please may we remind you to bring a baby photo of your child if you haven’t done so already. Finally, we would like to kindly remind you that next Friday the school will be closed for training purposes.
