This week has flown by and it’s hard to believe that next week will be the start of December!
Summary of learning
In Maths, we have been making progress in adding and subtracting ones using our related facts. If we know that 2+5 = 7 then we know that 12 + 5 = 17. Similarly, if we know that 9-3 = 6 then we know that 29 – 3 = 26. This is challenging for children who are not fully secure in their bonds to and within 10. Please keep using Numbots – little and often really does help. Next week, we will be adding by making 10.
In English, children have drafted a bank of expanded noun phrases related to their ‘diamond topic’ and then applied them to the second page of their information text. They also had fun creating word art- perhaps try this at home? They then went onto doing the same but with verbs for their third page. Finally, children look at different openers for each sentence for their fourth page. Next week, we will be focusing on editing.
Our grammar focus has been contractions- can’t, didn’t, hasn’t, couldn’t, it’s and I’ll. We also focused on the -s / -es / -ies suffix that is added to verbs in the third person singular. I sing – she sings. I catch the ball. He catches the ball. I try my best. It tries its best. Please check that your child knows the difference between vowels (a-e-i-o-u) and consonants.
In Geography, the children have been developing their map reading skills and how to read a two digit grid reference. Check that they know to go along the corridor and up the stairs! Next week, we will learn about urbanisation and some of the push/pull reasons for moving to the city.
In Phonics, our focus sound this week and next week is /oe/. Does your child know the difference between doe and dough; toe and tow; sew and so?! As ever, please read with your child daily using both the decodable books and reading for pleasure books. Phonics books will be changed on the morning of next Thursday 4th December.
